VBS News- Toxic Alberta Part 1

FOR PART 2 VISIT: http://www.vbs.tv/player.php?b... winter we decided VBS had to do a story on the Oil Sands of Alberta. So far no American media outlet had comprehensively covered it and even the local press's approach has left a lot to be desired. No one seemed to even know what it was. It's strange that as we hit peak oil and the global oil reserves go on the decline, we have heard next to nothing about the fact that Canada, due to improved oil extraction technology and record oil prices, is poised to become a major player in the geopolitical market place. The big question going in is what does this sudden access to previously unobtainable oil mean? Is this our get out of jail free card for the present energy crisis or is it another pipe dream being hyped up by the very corporations and lobbyists who stand to gain the most from it? Traveling through the haze of Ft. McMurray did nothing but fortify our stance on fossil fuel. It's dirty, expensive, and--most importantly--nonrenewable. Al Gore recently likened the oil sands to a drug pusher, satisfying our jones for quick and cheap energy. Say what you will about pushers (at least they're not kicking out greenhouse gasses to the tune of 80 million kilograms a day), but we think he's got us and our jones pretty much square on the head. PS: If you're wondering who did the music for this series, it was Pelican in episode 1, and Moss of Aura in episode 2.

dumb cluck? and yes...burn fuels...there are going to be cleaner alternatives. check out Harry Schoells clean running steam engine, he's adapting it for a lawnmower. and for family...who's whining...i'm stating a fact!! and again, im not a sheep blindly following along w/ the pack, i work in the industry drilling wells for nat. gas and oil (ironically right now i'm doing oilsands work) so validity....i know exactly what goes on....do you?

You completely missed the point, dumb cluck. BURN FUELS = environmental destruction! You are a sheep, blindly following along with the pack, no mind or will of your own. Sure, you tell yourself it's not true, but when is the last time you questioned the validity of religion, or what government tells you, or anything else you currently follow? I'm sick and tired of hearing about "family"! You chose the "family" route so don't whine to me because you are miserable trying to support such "family"!

You made no mention of new technology that is allowing colder process temps and as a result less external energy processing inputs. You tresspass on industrial sites, stand on unprocessed sand and say this "sucks". Well sir you suck, your biased reporting and open championing of your environmentalist agenda makes any point you try to make irrelevant to those of us who prefer fair reporting, the only people you will sway with this trash is like-minded individuals who are as mentally challenged.

Gotta love it when those with absolutley no real world expierience take up the role of professional activist. This is just another cut and paste on the worst rips on the oilsands. You claim to have researched this from all angles, you didn't. No mention of aboriginals who are partners, no mention that reclamation is taking place and certifications granted. You claim an areathe size of Florida has been decimated it has not, thats only the size of the deposit, most is too deep and requires SAGD.

when the assholes of the world quit calling us sheep!!! i need fuel to heat my home, the schools, the hospitals and for my vehicals so we can get to work to support our families. instead of bitching about pollution...bitch about finding cleaner ways to burn fuels...makes more sense to me!!
Allardyce (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
How long are the boneheaded sheep of the world going to pretend that humans can continue to depend on oil forever? Don't tell me about an area's economy when trying to justify pollution. You are a moron if you think pollution is ok for ANY reason. Perhaps if these idiots woke up and realized that no "god" is going to make it all better, they may be able to develop their brains enough to be decent humans!

Whoever created this video is a douchebag. This is the best thing to happen to Alberta. Ft Mac is sitting on the most oil in the world and some tool art student with a camera complaining about it isn't going to change the fact that theres money to be made and oil to keep in North America. Do everyone a favor and go into a bar there and complain and see the bottles start flying at your face

I don't know where they got that statistic but, Fort McMurray is not responsible for 2/3 of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. The idea that a city of 80,000 is responsible for 2/3 of all emissions for a country of 30 million is completely ridiculous. Please check your facts.
