Hi and thanks for your comments. The engine is a stock twinport 1600 (see my rebuild vid) and stock trans. Gear ratios do vary slightly (later boxes have taller gearing) but approximate speeds at 3500rpm (max torque) are:1st ~ 12mph2nd ~ 20mph3rd ~ 37mph4th ~ 53mphVW state a max safe speed of 4500 for these (stock) engines but at these speed the efficiency of the cooling fan drops away quite dramatically.

that journey looks awesome..i see you mentioned that you kept the engine at about 3000-3500 RPM in 1st and 2nd gear..i dont have a rev counter on my bus so could you tell me roughly what speed that is....your engine sounds very healthy is it a 1600cc...thanks

Absolutely, these engines are in reality oil cooled and it's certainly possible to overheat the oil - especially in a loaded bus.

That's a very sensible answer. Some people brag if you will that their aircooled engine cannot overheat. You probably know that the opposite is true, seeing that you have fitted an oil temperature gauge.

Hi, I rarely use full throttle, these engines don't like to lug. IMO it's better to keep the revs up (around 3000-3500rpm is good) but the load light and stick to a lower gear (mostly 1st and 2nd in this case). I believe this is a more mechanically sympathetic technique (I only have 50hp remember) and helps keep the oil temps nice and cool.

Did you give it full throttle in the straights and not manage to get to 3rd gear?I've been there a few weeks ago with my motorbike, you can imagine how much fun I had:)

Just got back from Switzerland. Was going to take out 76 camper on the Grimsel and Furka Pass but it broke down in France so we carried on in a hire car. :(
