Will China's Environmental Crisis Overshadow the Olympics

China's economy is soaring but with that expansion also comes concerns over its extreme pollution. But the Chinese government is trying to polish its environmental image. Digital Journal TV finds out what China is doing to clean up the mess.Digital Journal -- A booming economy. Heavy auto traffic. Horrible air quality. Combine all these ingredients and China wins the award for one of the most dangerously polluted countries in the world. With the 2008 Olympics looming, China is desperately trying to give the impression of a country working to combat these environmental problems. Will the public be convinced? There is no shortage of bad news for eco-watchers worried about China's toxic contributions: more than 3 million cars travel through Beijing's streets; among world capitals, only Cairo has worse air quality than Beijing; and one-third of all river water has been rated at its most degraded level, unfit for agricultural or even industrial use. This is a tough nightmare scenario for China to spin in its favor.Look at how the New York Times explained the consequences of China's pollution:"An internal, unpublicized report by the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning in 2003 estimated that 300,000 people die each year from ambient air pollution, mostly of heart disease and lung cancer. An additional 110,000 deaths could be attributed to indoor air pollution caused by poorly ventilated coal and wood stoves or toxic fumes from shoddy construction materials, said a person involved in that study."But the Chinese government is doing what it can to purify the air, water and land before the world turns its attention to the Communist country. Find out what China is working on to kill its pollution in a Digital Journal TV report, complete with footage from the Asia Society. It's not too late yet for China, and DigitalJournal.com Editor-in-Chief, Chris Hogg, explains why.

Western contribute to alot of gases, but china burn a shit load of coal and don't filter that shit on the output!!Same thing with water, at least we have EPA to bitch at the polluter. China and other countries see making money is better, and prefer filter air with their teeth!

it aint the worlds polluted nation, the only reason people say this is cause china is always mentioned by the usa, usa is actually the worst nation contributing to greenhouse, and when you divide the pollution amoung the people in china its quite small....australia small population yet large greenhouse emitter...not good :(

christ, what do people want, a thriving forest with deer and bears in the middle of a big-ass city, such as beijing? how about Los Angeles or NY? I've been to new york, in the middle of summer, during rush hour. and shit, it's quite bad sometimes. we shouldn't be hypocritical and point fingers, when we're doing the same shit ourselves here.

China, being the 2nd largest exporter in the world, has many factories for producing its products. These factories are the paramount reason why there is so much pollution in China. Because the Olympics are almost here, the Chinese government has said that they will close Beijing's factories and stop production in those factories to ensure that the pollution will not affect the athletes malignantly and will not interfere with their performance in the Olympics.

Your government officials do not care about their own people's health. They only care about their attained status in life and how to maintain their status. If someone tries to stop them they get a army tank driven over them.
